Minneapolis, MN – You’ve decided against metal braces and are considering Invisalign.
Good choice!
Invisalign braces are practically invisible and removable, allowing you to transform your smile incognito and on your own schedule.
Before you schedule your appointment, however, there are a few things you should know.
The following eight Invisalign secrets that will help you get the most from this revolutionary teeth straightening treatment.
1. Time Matters
Your orthodontist will tell you how long to wear your aligners.
While it may be tempting to forgo wearing them here and there, such as when you’re on a date or meeting someone for the first time, you are only doing yourself a disservice by not following your orthodontist’s orders.
Shaving an hour here and there will only lengthen the time you are required to wear Invisalign. If you want them to work to their maximum effect and limit the length of your treatment, keep them in for up to 20 hours a day (22 if you want the most from your Invisalign treatment).
2. Carry Your Toothbrush with You
To keep your Invisalign retainers free of the remnants of everything you eat, make sure you brush your teeth after every meal.
This may seem cumbersome at first, but you’ll get used to it. Plus, you’ll feel better with a cleaner mouth as your aligners work to straighten your teeth.
3. Leave Your Toothpaste at Home
Most people think that they’re required to clean their Invisalign trays with toothpaste, just as they would with their natural-born teeth. This is a no-no.
Toothpaste contains ingredients that are considered abrasive to Invisalign trays. Not only can your favorite paste wear away your aligners, but it can also cause buildup and odor.
Instead, clean your aligners with water and a mild anti-bacterial soap to keep them fresh and clean.
4. You Might Find Yourself Eating Less
Invisalign patients who discover that they have to brush after every meal (and snack) typically find themselves eating less frequently.
It gets to the point where you ask yourself if it’s worth it to have that mid-morning or afternoon snack because you know you’ll have to brush afterwards.
Just think, you could be straightening your teeth and shrinking your waistline in one fell swoop.
5. Go Easy on the Java
You probably don’t have to be told that coffee stains your teeth. While whitening toothpaste and treatments can help your teeth, your Invisalign retainers are another story.
Drinking more than one cup of coffee in the morning can stain your aligners a not-so-nice-and-healthy shade of brown. That’s hardly the look you want when you’re trying to keep your teeth straightening treatment under wraps.
6. Speaking Will Get Easier
When you first start wearing your aligners, you may find that you have a slight lisp. This is normal. It’s your mouth getting used to the foreign objects that are your aligner trays. But over time, your speaking will become clearer, and you’ll get used to talking with your aligners in.
7. Only Slight (Initial) Discomfort
Just as you will learn to talk with your aligners in, you may find that your mouth experiences a bit of soreness as you get used to wearing Invisalign. This, too, is normal. But know that any soreness you do feel is drastically less than what you would feel if you were wearing traditional metal braces.
8. No Frequent Office Visits
Many Invisalign patients think that they’ll be stopping by the orthodontist’s office every couple of weeks, but this just isn’t the case.
After the initial planning stage and after treatment starts, you will be given all of your aligner trays. You will then be responsible for changing them out and keeping on top of your treatment.
Your orthodontist may still want to see you every six to eight weeks or so, but that’s only to make sure the aligners are doing their job. Your orthodontist will probably work with you if you need to extend your office visits even longer than that.
And there you have it. You now have eight secrets that will make your time wearing Invisalign much easier.
Now there’s only one thing left to do.
